The Byer Steel Difference

Our rolling mill, our raw material, our commitment to customer needs, and our team of dedicated and talented employees, are all what make Byer Steel uniquely suited to fill all your rebar and scrap needs.

A Rebar Mill Unlike Any Other

In the late 60’s, Abe Byer wanted to grow beyond the family’s scrap business.

He had an idea, piles of scrap axles, and a talented engineer on staff with experience designing steel mill rolling stands and sheers. In 1970, the idea became a reality and the A.B Mill, named after Abe Byer himself, fired up the furnace for the first time. But unlike any other mill in the world, it was uniquely designed to only “re-roll” (meaning steel is not fully melted) train axles into rebar. More than fifty years later, we are still rolling approximately 40,000 tons a year of rebar from this original mill, with only a few modifications over the years.

Our work day begins at 2500° F

The day starts with a blazing furnace loaded with retired train axles, heating them to over two thousand degrees, the axle is then reduced by a series of chain driven stands between rolls until it is finished into a ½”–1.25” diameter strand diameter strand. The final rolls create the deformation or “ribbing” on the bar before it is sheared to standard 20’ or 40’ lengths. The rebar is then bundled, crane lifted to our fabrication division, loaded onto a truck for shipment, or stacked in our vast warehouse for stock. All in a day’s work at Byer Steel!

Byer Steel:

A History of Innovation and Integrity

For a family business to not only survive, but to thrive for almost a century in Cincinnati, it takes relentless, hard-working and honest people who constantly pivot with change and focus on providing the products and services that customers want and in the way they want them. The Byer family business started by peddling scrap on the banks of the Ohio River in 1937. Today, the company produces, sells and fabricates over 30,000 tons of rebar a year. This rebar provides concrete reinforcement for buildings, hospitals, garages and landmarks throughout the city and tri-state area.

Our team is here to serve you and will continue to strive to meet your Scrap and Rebar needs with integrity in our transactions and innovation in our response to your business needs and specifications for more generations to come.

    2ND GENERATION

In 1937, following Prohibition and a successful bootlegging career, Abe moved his family and opened American Compressed Steel on the banks of the Ohio River in Cincinnati.

Locations were also opened in Kansas City and Houston, run by bothers Phil & Sidney.

Abe acquired Frederick Steel, a steel service center in Carthage, Ohio in the early 1950s.

In 1963 Abe purchased Constellation Steel Mill Equipment, owning several patents for sheer equipment used in the scrap industry as well as steel mill rolling operations.

In 1970, Abe and engineer Edwin Prey constructed a small “bikini mill” from mill stands that were made by sister company Constellation Steel. AB MILL was created, and the production of rebar from scrapped train axels began.

  • Herb Byer + Larry Byer

    3RD GENERATION

In 1978 Herb and Larry officially took over the business and moved all operations to current location at 200 W. North Bend Rd.

Herb oversaw the rebar mill and service center, successfully selling rebar from AB Mill and structural steel to wholesale building suppliers and brokers, putting Frederick Steel on the map in the greater Cincinnati Area.

Larry ran the scrap recycling center, processing scrap metal from commercial and individual accounts from all reaches of the city. The reputation and customer relationships built by the brothers were earned by decades of hard work, integrity and dependability.

Both grew significantly, securing the Byer name in both the rebar and scrap worlds.

  • Shayne Byer + Burke Byer

    4TH GENERATION

In 2004, Larry’s son and daughter, Burke and Shayne entered the company. Burke took a strong lead in the Rebar Mill and Structural section of the business after Herb, continuing to expand the sales territory and product offerings.

In 2012, he led the purchase of a small fabrication business, Gastric Rebar, facilitating the start of the Rebar Fabrication Division. The structural steel division, Frederick Steel, was sold in 2013 to Benjamin Steel to streamline operations and focus on Rebar Fabrication.

In 2014, the various companies merged under one company name… Byer Steel.

In 2019, Shayne Byer took over as sole Owner/CEO. She closed the Retail Scrap division in 2022, focusing growth and investment in the Rebar Mill, Fabrication division as well as the Commercial Scrap division.

Currently Byer Steel is the only woman owned steel mill in the USA and is driven daily by the same integrity and customer focus that has allowed the business to thrive over 4 generations!
